<–Martin Luther King died in the midst of supporting workers in a struggle to form a union

spotted this over at Labourstart, the 15 million member strong UNI Global Union has issued a statement in support of The Employee Free Choice Act, they are standing in solidarity with us world wide, click the petition and send it, let’s not let them down.

Passage of US Employee Free Choice Act is Key to Global Organising Drive

- Labour news from UNI global union – for trade unions in a global services economy.

UNI Global Union has pledged the support of its 15 million members to build a worldwide solidarity campaign for US legislation that allow workers to join unions without fear of management retaliation.

The passage of the Employee Free Choice Act in the United States will benefit workers around the globe, said UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings.

Jennings on Tuesday chaired a meeting with leaders of US unions affiliated to both the AFL-CIO and the Change to Win federation, who are working together to get the legislation passed. UNI President and UFCW President Joe Hansen and AFL-CIO President John Sweeney spoke at the opening of the meeting, which also included representatives from the International Trade Union Confederation and trade union centres from around the world.

The unions and union centres formed a task force to support joint global action to ensure the Free Choice act becomes law. They plan to use this model in other countries to support union organising and recognition.

“Having a law that protects workers’ right to unionise in the United States is vital to winning union recognition and bargaining rights world-wide,” Jennings said. “American companies have been exporting their abusive labour practices to every country they do business in and foreign companies have eagerly embraced those practices when they cross the US border. It is clear that without legislation protecting workers, multinational companies will treat workers as poorly as they can.”

If passed, the Employee Free Choice Act would give US workers a free and fair chance to form a union, hold anti-union employers accountable and force employers to stop dragging out contract negotiations.

More than half of U.S. workers—60 million—say they would join a union right now if they could but US-based companies routinely deny workers the right to form unions and bargain collectively. The current labour law in the US allows these companies to fire pro-union employees and wage intimidating anti-union campaigns before elections. Even when unionising drives are successful, companies will contest the results, which can lead to years of delays or invalidation of a pro-union vote.

US-based employers like Wal-Mart have fought unions and engaged in illegal labour practices in countries like Argentina, Mexico and China.

European-based companies have entered the race to the bottom when it comes to their labour practices in the United States. Deutcshe Telekom, which has a collective bargaining agreement with German union ver.di in its home country of Germany, has waged a vicious anti-union campaign at its American subsidiary T-mobile.

“For too long, the US has led the race to the bottom on labour rights,” Jennings said. “Passing this new law would be a major victory for US workers and, in the midst of this global recession, it is more important than ever.”

UNI is calling on its member unions around the world to tell their government leaders to urge the Obama administration to make the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act a top priority.

Wal-Mart closes only union department in North America

Filed under: Global, free trade, travesty, wal-mart — theunionnews @ 5:38 pm

Unreal, finally a few workers became union in Wal-Mart, so they closed the section. Wal-Mart is a disgrace!

From PR Newswire:

Wal-Mart Watch Responds to Wal-Mart’s Closure of Unionized Tire and Lube Express in Gatineau, Canada

Wal-Mart, anti-union, anti-workerWASHINGTON, Oct. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — In response to Wal-Mart’s closure of the recently unionized Gatineau, Quebec Tire and Lube Express, Wal-Mart Watch Executive Director David Nassar released the following statement:

“Wal-Mart’s closure of the recently unionized Tire and Lube Express auto shop in Gatineau, Quebec shows how Wal-Mart is willing to do anything to keep its workers from receiving better wages, decent benefits or fairer
working conditions. The Gatineau workers have merely exercised their human rights under Canadian Law, something that is clearly unacceptable to Wal-Mart.

“Later today, Wal-Mart Watch will launch a new web site which features the real stories of Wal-Mart employees who are suffering under Wal-Mart’s low-wage, low-benefit business model.

“The closure in Canada clearly shows that Wal-Mart has no desire to change.”

Fuck you Wal-Mart, you are a huge reason that the American people are having hard financial problems and you had led they way to giving our jobs oversea’s.

Sunday Movie Review: Zeitgeist Addendum

Filed under: Bailout, Global, WTC, Zeitgeist, conspiracy, free trade, wto — theunionnews @ 4:22 pm

“We shall have World Government, whether or not we like it. The only question is whether World Government will be achieved by conquest or consent.”- James Paul Warburg appearing before the Senate on 7th February 1950

Take it as you will, this is the second part to the Zeitgeist Movie, available free for anyone with a computer. As a friend of mines father said about the first movie, if only 1% of it is true the world is a fu@ked up place.

The first movie goes through the gamut of the history of religion, the idea of 9/11 being a false flag operation, the history of the privatization of the US banking system via the Federal Reserve, img526/7139/mv5bnjg0mzm5nzcymf5bml5wa5.jpgone world Government, the North American Union and the New World Order. Along the way there is a hypnotic soundtrack which features video clips and audio from the movie Network, Bill Hicks, Lou Dobbs, Martin Luther King, George Carlin, among others, and quotes like the one posted above.

Like I say, you can see it for many reasons, I watched it with some friends last year while the NY Jets were doing really crappy, and I did learn a lot about the Federal Reserve and religion. As far as the 9/11 stuff, that is up to you to sift through. The squeamish may even chose to skip through the section if they so choose. Was it worth it, definitely better than watching your run of the mill Hollywood junk, a lot better than watching the Jets get pummeled.

The first movie gets a whopping 8.7 out of 10 stars from almost 7,000 voters at IMDb (Internet Movie Database) and the most helpful comment I read was by The Goat:

Very compelling, definitely don’t believe everything you hear, do your own research!
I’ve watched this movie about 4 times by now, will definitely watch it again as i show it to others. Many interesting arguments, many good points.

While this film is aimed to prove everything presented as truth, one should watch this with an open mind. Take in all the topics, then do your own research, just with any speaker/film/presentation. To blindly follow is pure ignorance.

I do not believe everything in this film. I do however think that everyone should see it if nothing more than a thought experiment. You should be aware of all sides of an argument as to make your argument more effective.

Here’s Part 2, which starts off real slow, but gets interesting when they talk about the monetary system and Corporations, it speaks of free trade and sweatshops, Wal-Mart and Bechtel, there’s some talk about how profit rules over people and while the first movie left you with a sense of fear, this movie seeks answers to get our world on the right track.

Chalk this up as very interesting, at least in my book, and a lot better if you watch part 1 first. Is there truth in this movie or is this wingnut conspiracy stuff? I’ll leave that up to you to decide. Absolutely a great view if your pissed about the bailout.

Blue Pill/Red Pill?

Neo: What truth?
Morpheus: That you are a slave, Neo. Like everyone else, you were born into bondage, born inside a prison that you cannot smell, taste, or touch. A prison for your mind. (long pause, sighs) Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself. This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back.
(In his left hand, Morpheus shows a blue pill.)
Morpheus: You take the blue pill and the story ends. You wake in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. (a red pill is shown in his other hand) You take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes. (Long pause; Neo begins to reach for the red pill) Remember — all I am offering is the truth, nothing more.
(Neo takes the red pill and swallows it with a glass of water)

Trade Unionist in Turkey, Meryem Özsögüt, jailed for 6 months, get E-Active to help

Got this from Eric Lee over at Labourstart, doing my part, please pass it along.

This message will be very brief and to the point.

The Turkish government has jailed a woman trade unionist, Meryem Özsögüt, and has kept her in detention for nearly six months.
Meryem is a leader of the public sector union SES, and we’ve been asked by Public Services International (PSI) to launch a big online campaign demanding her release.

For more details and to add your signature, please click here now.

This campaign will not take off, and we will not secure Meryem’s release, unless we can mobilize thousands of our members around the world.

Please do what you can to help this campaign go viral — forward it to your email lists, post information on your union websites, pass out flyers at events, use new tools like Twitter, Facebook and blogs to spread the word.

Meryem needs our help. I know that I can count on all of you.

Eric Lee

Correction: Top labor leader in Honduras killed, yeah just the place for more Free trade

Some say it was a robbery attempt gone astray, while some believe it was premeditated. From Reuters (4/42/08) :

EGUCIGALPA, April 24 (Reuters) – Masked gunmen killed the leader of Honduras’ largest union group in an attack authorities said was a robbery attempt, but fellow unionists said she was targeted because of her job.

Rosa Fuentes, the head of the country’s largest labor federation, was shot late on Wednesday after a carful of six armed men wearing ski-masks smashed into the back of her car, police spokesman Hector Mejia told Reuters.

Fuentes and the driver of the car died at the scene and another union leader died en route to the hospital.

Police said the attack was an attempted robbery by gang members. The attackers fled when another car pulled up, leaving without some $4,000 Fuentes had with her.

But fellow union members said Fuentes, whose CTH federation groups manufacturing unions with banana workers and civil servants, was killed because of her work.

“This was done by enemies of the labor movement, by hired killers,” said Rigoberto Duron, No. 2 at the CTH.

Honduras is part of a regional free trade deal with the United States that has been criticized for its lax labor controls in Central American countries.

In neighboring Guatemala, five labor leaders were murdered last year. That case prompted the AFL-CIO labor federation to file a complaint with the U.S. labor department saying the government had failed to seriously investigate, violating provisions of the trade pact.

The Bush administration has been pushing Congress in recent days to approve a free trade agreement with Colombia. U.S. labor groups oppose the pact, saying Bogota has done too little to curb violence against trade union members.
